I retired from Metropolitan Police in December 2006. I guess I should be worried at least until my fifth anniversary, which is December 2011. I take fitness, nutrition and health very seriously. I've let my fitness slip a little, but I walk a lot instead of running or playing football. Also, I am very careful about what I eat.
This article is all about you, and what you do when you retire. Do you still work long hours? You should slow down so you can get used to the slower pace which will come in the near future. You don't have to stop working 12 hours a days and do very little.
You will want to stop and smell the flowers, because most police officers are so busy with their jobs that they often forget to enjoy the little things in life.
What are the things you should be doing to maintain your health, fitness and nutrition during retirement? Here are some suggestions.
Your General Health
You should always read your body's signs, as they will usually tell you whether something is wrong. If you feel that you need to, do not hesitate to visit the doctor's office. Don't put off anything, it is better to be safe than sorry.
It might be the perfect time to give up smoking. Listen, I'm not a preacher. It is only a suggestion. To be fair, I have never even smoked.
Your Exercise Regime.
Do a review of your past and determine if it is in line with the new lifestyle you want to lead. If you are not the best when it comes to fitness, you should always have a plan. You will have to make the final decision, so be wise.
Many people I know continue to play golf regularly, which is fine. But you should also consider other types of exercise that get your heart pumping. Don't get too crazy here. Maybe a little power walking or even swimming.
You should remain active as long as possible. You will lose something if you do not use it.
This is a very interesting topic. I believe the key is to examine your sleep habits, and if possible, improve them. Everyone is different and will find the right balance. As a policeman, I often did not get enough sleep in between shifts. This is because I tried to lead a normal life.
As a police officer, I used to live on between five and six hours of sleep per night. Is it enough? Consider increasing your hours a little. I have increased my nightly hours to six to seven and have really noticed the difference.

Even though I enjoy my food, I eat healthier now than I did when I served as a police officer. What should I be eating more of? It is important to realize that there is no need to rush when it comes to improving your diet. You cannot expect to change your diet overnight.
Introduce more fruit, vegetables, and fibre into your diet. You may be able to reduce your intake of salt, sugars and saturated fats. You will need to do some research on this topic.
Your Requirement For Fluids.
Be careful. I like a beer, and I know many other police officers do too. However, your activity level may initially drop when you retire. But sometimes, your beer consumption will remain the same. Your fitness, nutrition and overall health can be affected by what you drink.
Only kidding, I think that drinking a variety of beverages is good for you. So, add some gin, vodka and scotch. Aim for around two litres (or three pints) of fluids per day. Water, juices, and cordials should make up the majority of this fluid intake.
You will need to go to the toilet more often if you drink a lot of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate. These are diuretics that cause your body's urine production rate. You'll need to use the toilet more frequently and your ability to retain water will be compromised. This may not be a good thing as you enter retirement.
